Whether you are looking to freshen up your home decor, are are planning a new home or renovation, we have the rundown on what is in style this year!

1. Relax Your Decor

This year, home design is going to be more low-key. There is an emphasis on a casual look in your home. Super matching items are out, and mixing things up is in. Mixing in new textures, woods, and fabrics all lend your home a comfortable feel. Real plants add fresh dimension, and worn items like rugs and fabrics make things feel less sparse. Think of your decor as being tailored free spirit.

2. Interior Finishings on Top

This year, there is more emphasis being placed on the more permanent aspects of your home. If you are building a new home or are renovating your home, this is where you can have some fun! Wallpaper and furnishings are important, but take a look at how mouldings, archways, window casings, and tile all make a big difference to your plans. Additions to special touches here will give your home a sophisticated feel.

3. Lighter Woods are a Bright Idea

Natural woods are making a big comeback in home decor, but we're not talking about your oak cabinets from the 80's. These woods are blonder, and reflect light and create a great neutral backdrop for the rest of your decor. Lighter woods also add a lot of warmth to your home, and can be paired with other wood shades to create an eclectic mix. These woods are being found in cabinets, flooring, furniture, and accents. Natural woods go great with all kinds of fabrics and designs, and in any room in the house.

4. Dark Green in In

The navy and midnight blues are still stylish, but try a hint of green in your design. Whether it's paint in a powder room, or throw pillows added to a room, make some space for these emerald hues. Green with white, tan, and brass gives a scandinavian feel; emerald with with dark wood, black hardward and brass finishing, will pop in a any room.

5. Make Space for Calm

While we might love our smartphones and tablets, sometimes we need to unplug from the constant buzz of alerts and emails. Carve out an escape in your home by creating spaces where you can escape. Perhaps you leave all media outside the bedroom with a basket to deposit everything at the end of the day. Maybe it's creating nooks that you can tuck your phone into to keep it out of direct sight and reach. Try stocking up living areas with books, magazines, colouring books and games, so that everyone has an oppotunity to try something new together that doesn't involve a screen. Even if it's only for an hour, it's a way to introduce some peaceful habits into your everyday.

6. Seek Out New Ideas from Everyday Places

When it comes to home design in 2017, get inspired by your surroundings. Look for a colour in your neighbourhood that you love. Take inspiration from a favourite restaurant. Try unconventional materials, shapes and colours. Try a raw cut stone piece like quartz. Lucite, metallics and jewel tones can be found in all kinds of places, with surprising effect.
