Leaving his small, hometown in Germany for Canada in 1953, Rudy Stepper arrived in Calgary with seven dollars to his name, and almost the same number of English words in his vocabulary. The other thing he arrived with was his passion for fine woodworking, and his ingenuity for building anything from wood.
His passion and craft were soon applied to the construction of the first Stepper Home. This first home was truly a hands-on affair, with Rudy and his wife Ema digging the basement out without the aid of backhoes or power equipment. From excavation to pouring the foundation, through framing and roofing and finishing that first home established the Stepper standard for quality and livability. Soon that one house had turned into ten, then fifty and as such, Stepper Custom Homes was on its way to becoming one of Calgary's premier builders.
Today we build close to 250 homes a year, and a big reason for our success is that Stepper is still very much a family operation - in terms of Rudy and Ema's children, and now grandchildren who work here. And of course that family feeling extends to our staff, and our customers who live under a Stepper roof.
What remains after fifty years is that the reason people still choose to build and work with Stepper, is our uncompromising commitment to enhancing our communities, and our homes.
